That is true. And if your group doesn't mind asking people to 'doublethink' and forget their own goals for a second in the interest of the game, such a variant is fine.
Just to be sure that I am understanding you right: Do you agree that such a metagame is a precondition for the variant to work?

Ok. I think that if you consider taking your own interests into account when the (variant) rules tell you to choose ancient targets to be analogous to switching die faces, our opinions on what constitutes a game are so different that any attempt to find common ground is hopeless.
