"Doublethink" is a loaded term, but otherwise yes, the players need to be able to think outside their personal goals for this kind of rule to work. (An RPG analogy would be a gamemaster running NPCs according to their motives while also making sure the players are having a good game.) This is a really good reason for not including this rule in the base game.
(As you may have seen on other threads, this kind of difference between groups is resulting in some unhappiness with the alliance rules.)
