Trying to "game" the independent ships to do what you want just because they are controlled by another player is about as outside the game as punching someone in the face.

They are supposed to be independent, some people prefer to have them behave more sensibly, and they deal damage with some common sense. This just happened to be controlled by another player. This just makes it part of the game system, and not something you can discuss and haggle for.

Since another player rolls the dice for the ancients, you could feasibly ask the other player to cheat and switch the dice faces to miss, and then promise not to attack them in the game. No physical violence involved but it is still cheating.
