My question to you is could one play the six player game with the 9 player setup? That would lead to having 3 ancient home worlds but the downside is there would be a bigger map. Each player would be next to one other player and one ancient home world.
In the thread http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1001987/tips-for-5-players a player reports having tried this with five players. Personally, I think it was unfair to the newbies, since they had less access to the ancient home worlds. That wouldn't be a problem for six players.
I like the cramped, conflict-filled standard six player setup. But I don't think that your idea would break anything. It would just be different. It would probably change the relative strengths of the races. Figuring that out would be part of the fun.
In your experience, during a 6 player game is throwing all the sector 2 hexes together (including the four ancient home worlds), shuffling them up and revealing the top ones as they are explored a perfectly valid thing to do?
The reason I ask this is because I have only just got the expansion, and the only suggestion my group made on the base game was the ancients should have been more varied, hence me wanting to add in the varied cruisers.
We will of course be using the Ancient Dreadnought in the Galactic Centre.
