While focusing on an awe inspiringly powerful fleet can seem like a be all and end all strategy on the surface, you'll find that playing a more balanced strategy is usually more effective. As others have mentioned, having ultimate dreadnoughts is not enough to secure a win as they can generally be easily pinned and outmaneuvered. Interceptors may not be particularly effective throughout the game, but they can be devastating in the endgame with Neutron Bombs and essentially any advanced drive technology, and they don't even necessarily need cannons, so you can install more of them to increase their move distance. As others have said, no smart player is going to run their entire fleet head first into overwhelming odds. If player 1 is focusing mostly on enhancing and moving their fleets, then the best strategy for player 2 is to capitalize in every other area of the game (as it seems he did).
