Specific situations where you would have an odd number of hull are not very convincing. Those arguments make sense for Shard Hull which is a single tile; Conifold Field is a ship upgrade. In short, while 3+2=5, 3+3=6. Of course this tech matters.
Distortion Shield DOESN'T have other uses, and as such stands out to me as... lame. I'd really like to know whether the playtesters run this rare tech.

Regarding conifold field, that's true, but dedicating 4 energy to hulls is a huge deal, with the exception maybe being cruisers with tachyon sources. Dreadnoughts with a lucky shard hull draw + conifold field, with tachyon source would probably be pretty beastly though.
As for distortion shield, I agree this tech is subtle, but it is a good defense against missiles if they're becoming a problem. Also, they pull a lot of the teeth out of a number of the new ancients. That being said, I agree that this one probably isn't a prime choice for most; but isn't a bad starting tech to have as the Lyrans.
