In the one game I managed to play Lyra, I wasn't very able to make particularly great use of them, as my explore draws yielded relatively terrible results (honestly I think this was the worst explore draw luck I've had in any of my games; worst case scenario sort of thing: all empty or 1 planet systems in rings 2 and 3 and little economy to waste on additional explore actions), and my brother was romping the other side of the board as Rho Indi. So to say the least, while I did end up getting 6 shrines, my unlucky resource production really didn't fuel much of a victory possibility for me.
The one game I played with these guys started out the same way. Found a couple of those tiles that only have a discovery, took 2 VPs (allowed me to win) and the rest were resources I badly needed.

Yes, when you can't find any brown planets and you have an aggressive neighbor you need ships first, which means you can't get all the shrines

Rerolls in combat are awesome! This almost allows the Lyra to make better use of a smaller fleet
I repeatedly forgot to use this ability. I may have won 1 or two more fights, but on the whole I rolled well to begin with. I'll have to see more of it to make an informed opinion

Distortion Shield as a starting tech:
Non-factor, no one researched missiles in our game, though one of the players should have to counter the faster Rho-indi ships
I'll have to play with them in the game more though, it was an a-typical game. I did win, but only because 2 of the players threw themselves into battle to prevent the Orion/Rho-indi alliance from destroying me
