True for basic Ancients, but not necessarily so against the cruisers, dreadnought and hives.

That is an often proposed change. It is not viable in practice though, for a number of reasons. Most significantly, the authority to assign ancient hits may come to rest on a player who actually wants you to win the battle.

It could work in a two-player game, though.


Well, it's basic common sense that the human assigning the damage would be the one who is currently most adversarial towards you. I don't think that's a problem. If there is a disagreement amongst your opponents, you can still default to the basic targeting rules.
