I think the best compromise (both of which have already been mentioned but I'm just consolidating) to fix most of the problems mentioned are1a) allow the secondary player to take a tech AFTER the primary player has taken one
1b) If playing with the official rules (not 1a), allow players to bypass their secondary turn if they wanted to research
2) Both players must pass their markers at the same time (so markers are always across from each other), so a player cant hold on to one and have two turns in a row
