So... Conifold field...I agree with the earlier comment regarding a specialized build. I'd have to be energy abundant, and there are no improved hulls to research.
As stated before, it's great against ion cannon, and it'll find more use when playing the other expansion elements such as ancient cruisers depending on their ship configuration, flux missiles, ancient hives etc.
Also, adding it to any track mid-late game can mean a few research points, or for magellan, a free discovery.
