If my biggest problem with Eclipse is how simple diplomacy is, will this expansion be for me? (I'm buying regardless, but still......)
I wouldn't consider Eclipse diplomacy to be simple. There is little in the way of game mechanic diplomacy, but there is a great deal of table talk diplomacy. Arranging nonaggression pacts with neighbors is critical before going off to war to avoiding the two front war mentioned. Our group has come up with many ways to make deals and your limited only by your imagination. That said, the expansion provides a little bit more for game mechanic diplomacy particularly with allowing for more direct cooperation with your allies.
But even in base, if your failing with early aggression your failing in diplomacy.
"allowing for more direct cooperation with your allies" is basically what I'm talking about. My (and my group's) biggest problem with diplomacy in the base game is that, even if you wanted to help each other, it was very difficult to not step on each other's toes. If two players with diplomatic relations were at war with one opponent, we find that you have to really plan movement out to avoid having your ships in the same place at the same time, as that would case combat and make one of you a traitor. Sometimes it would be more beneficial to NOT engage in diplomatic relations, so that you could cooperate more freely, not caring if you lose an interceptor or two in order to fly through their territory more freely. Seemed very gamey and unnecessary.
It's probably our only problem with the game period, actually.
So if the expansion allows for easier cooperation, it would definitely be a must buy for me at least!
