I AM colorblind and even I can tell catan red from catan orange. Now orange and yellow are another matter.
It's not about being able to tell, it's about having to concentrate on it.
Ask a chess player to comment on the tactical situation of a game, presenting them with a board with black and white pieces. Now try it with someone else and red and orange pieces. It will take them longer to respond. There's a reason people use contrasting colors for these things - the more contrast, the quicker the brain is at picking out the patterns.
