Being aggressive early is rarely beneficial in games with more than 2 players, unless you are isolated. The problem, as others have mentioned, is inviting a 2-front war, which you can never survive early in Eclipse.
If you're attacking early, you should be controlling your backside access so that its impossible to be attacked on a second front. If you're opening paths to TWO opponents, you're just asking for trouble.
Eclipse does not simply allow anyone to attack you while you are fighting someone else, wormholes dictate who can attack you.
If all these systems have been explored already, then we aren't talking about early anymore.
Early attacks require exploration towards your (perceived weaker) victim, meaning you most likely can't explore and control hex orientation on multiple fronts. Posturing toward your target reveals to any other adjacent opponents that you need to split your forces, inciting him to control hex orientation between you and him. I don't see any other way this can play out except maybe when playing Planta.
