Added: I have found after many plays that playing defensively and attacking only when needed does make it far more strategic and I am less prone to being a victim of diplomatic manipulations. I almost never take the middle now because it leaves me to connected to other people. I prefer only 1 way into my system and leave resources to build defenses only as I need them. That way even if 2 people want to attack me, they can't coordinate.

Still, if they decide you're winning and they should attack you instead of someone else, there's not too much you can do about that, right? I don't mind Euros but it's the diplomacy-heavy Euros that aren't to my taste.

I guess I don't see all that much point in playing a game where a large chunk of the game mechanics is a detailed space combat system and much of the point of playing the game well is to avoid actually using it. But it's definitely a matter of taste.

Welcome to real life these days :P The point of all that military technology and training is so your country DOESN'T have to fight a war to defend its territory, because everyone is too scared to attack it. Now I understand RL isn't neccessarily fun. But some people enjoy being good at expanding and developing in the right ways to simulate that goal.

Exactly in my last game I had Dreadnoughts with two antimatter cannons, +3 computers, -3 shields, two improved hulls and a 4 movement drive. My opponent and I were too scared of each other to attack so my Dreadnoughts flew around slaughtering ancients.
