At this point, this development has become a must-buy for me. Am I wrong in this? It seems like it's one of the most competitive VP developments you can grab, and while it "seems" circumstantial to be able to take advantage of it, any game I've researched it, it has become 3+ vp for 6 materials. I imagine some games it will be only 1 or 2, but I've mostly played 3 and 4 player games so there wasn't really a reputation shortage.
On average, I believe it will net you 2 points. If you get 3 points out of it, you can consider yourself lucky. Still, getting 2 points for 6 materials is a very solid move, but the difficult question is, when to buy it?I would say, if possible, when you are certain that you have more battles ahead of you before the end of the game than you have spots remaining on your Reputation Track (taking into account Diplomatic Relations not yet formed). Yes, this makes it a gamble, and partially you have to know the people you're playing with: when you run out of Ancients, are you going to be able to pick fights with your neighbors (or can you count on them to pick fights with you)?
