Ok, I played them today, first time, 4 player game (about 10 plays under my belt)
everybody agreed. THEY SUCK.
compared with every other race I see NO reason to choose them on any occasion other than two players.
They just get their asses ripped apart. their high ship costs keep them from buying the ships needed to defend themselves not to speak from the ONLY two colony ships.
is there anything I missed? I just don't get it.

They don't suck, in my opinion. I won with them by a large margin (vs. Mechanema, Planta, and Exiles). You've noticed their disadvantages, but not their advantages.
The biggest advantage, I think, is 4 moves per move action. This gives you enormous flexibility on offense and defense, especially if you put better drives on your ships. With fusion drives, I was able to effectively defend my entire empire with a fleet based at the galactic center. With a single action you can move a large fleet or send small fleets deep into enemy territory.
The second biggest advantage is built-in free shields. This makes regular ancients and the GCDS very easy to take, since they only hit on 6s. It also annoys all of your opponents, who will almost always install computers (since computers are great in general).
Then, there is the money economy: the ability to generate extra money from fighting and to trade 3 money for 2 science or materials, the most efficient trade rate of any race. These combo very well together, and can allow you to make unexpected science/build advances.
Finally, there is the lack of penalty from the traitor card. There is never a downside to trading ambassadors, you can just betray them later (and probably will).
To make all of this work together, you need to play assertively - build a large fleet, move it around aggressively, and attack basically anything you can kill - ancients or enemy fleets.
