Here's actually a session report of a game played in that kind of manner:
"Four"-player game between two people: Back Stabs and Black Slabs
"Four"-player game between two people: Back Stabs and Black Slabs
This session report, between my son and me, was with the base game only, so alliances were not part of it. Also, we arranged each of our two races so that they did not neighbor each other, making the possibility of diplomatic relations with ourselves less of a given. And finally, we only counted our lower-scoring race as our final score. (We're undecided about whether that was a good idea, although I still think it's intriguing.)
So it may not address precisely what you are asking, but I hope it's worth your time if you decide to read it.
