I agree that the amount and early timing of battle increases as the number of players increase. But shouldn't this game also be fun with less players? Also, I recognize that with fine tuned tactics you can achieve much in this game during 9 rounds. I master it myself, but sometimes I find it tiring always to maximise my turns 110 %.
But lets face it - we are all different players with different play styles and taste of what makes a game great. Some likes to build up empires and then prepare for war, others don't. But why not include optional rules that improves gameplay for those who like to play this game more civilization like? Is this so annoying for "fast" or more "war oriented" players? You *don't* have to use this rule.
With 18 turns you still wouldn't always be able to do everything. And good luck would still be an important factor with supernova hexes etc. The point is, that with more turns you would now have longer time battling for the galaxy - witch I find a lot of fun. I imagine a lot of turns fighting over control of the centre galaxy, alliances shifting back and forth depending on which race is in the lead and so on.
And clever end game strategies would still be useful - they would just be different. Now optimized for 18 turns (for instance) instead of 9 turns.
So I still don't see the problems. It requires play testing, yes, to balance the races if needed. But isn't that what game development is all about?
But I get the impression that any unofficial suggestions for improvements of this game is being shot down. So I'm probably just going to work on this myself. Could have been great though with some more positive feedback.
