It may also be partly due to the size of the market. US is huge single market, whereas Europe (despite the efforts to create a single market)is still in many ways divided into few smaller and several tiny ones. None of the European markets have the same volume potential as the US, and both the stores and the distributors in Europe have to cover their costs with a lot smaller volume.
This is just general speculation on my part of course.
